~Quote of the week~

"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are."

          1)         Dally: “…Crazy for wanting Johnny to stay outa trouble, for not wantin’ him to get hard.  If he’d been like me he’d never have been in this mess.  If he’d got smart like me he’d never have run into that church.  That’s what you get for helpin’ people.  Editorials in the paper and a lot of trouble… You’d better wise up, Pony… you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt.  You look out for yourself and nothin’ can touch you…”  (pssst: irony.)

I think it is ironic (hence the  {pssst: irony} above) because Dally is talking about how "cold" and "smart" he is about if you don't care you wont get hurt. Yet he is driving his blue corvet way past the speed limit, tricking the police to give Ponyboy a ride to the hospital, getting there after johnny dies, and cussing running down the hall having an emotional break down. He does carenot about a lot, but about one thing, the thing he lost...

        2)      Johnny: “Stay gold.”

This is a touching quote, because Ponyboys favorite word is "gold/golden" because all of the the good things in his life, he describes as gold/golden. His mom, two bits Mom, the sunset, Soda. Everything. Johnny wants to remind pony that he is Golden in his eyes.
